The Hindenburg disaster was an airship accident that occurred on May 6, 1937, in Lakehurst, New Jersey, United States.
Filled with hydrogen, it caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The accident caused 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen) among the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), and an additional fatality on the ground.
Later in the broadcast, as reporter Herb Morrison learned that there were survivors, he said, “I hope that it isn’t as bad as I made it sound at the very beginning.” Years later, Morrison recalled that he yelled “Oh, the humanity,” because he thought everyone on board had died; in fact, sixty-two of the people on board survived.
Some people believe that the Hindenburg disaster site in New Jersey is haunted by the spirits of the victims. Others have reported feeling bad vibes and hearing footsteps in Hangar No. 1 at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, which was used as a morgue after the disaster.
