About the case

Photographer Teresa Halbach disappeared on October 31, 2005; her last appointment was a meeting with Avery, at his home near the grounds of Avery's Auto Salvage, to photograph his sister's minivan that he was offering for sale on Autotrader.com. Halbach's vehicle was found partially concealed in the salvage yard, and bloodstains recovered from its interior matched Avery's DNA. Investigators later identified charred bone fragments found in a burn pit near Avery's home.

In the video diary, which Halbach created three years before she was murdered, she discussed her dreams and her death. 'Let’s say I died tomorrow. I don’t think I will. I think I have a lot more to do … I just want people I love to know that whenever I die, that I was happy. That I’m happy with what I did with my life,' she says in it.

Personal life

In October 2005, the month of her death, Halbach, with short, sporty brown hair that she wore tucked behind her ears, expressive brown eyes, a big smile that dominated her face, was an enthusiastic young woman with a lively personality and a new photography business. She coached her little sister’s volleyball team at a Catholic school, listened to the Beatles and No Doubt, watched “Extreme Makeover” with her younger sisters, and dreamed about becoming a mom.

Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey

Steven Avery was arrested and charged with Halbach's murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and mutilation of a corpse on November 11, 2005. He had already been charged with a weapons violation as a convicted felon. Avery maintained that the murder charge was a frameup, intended to discredit his pending civil case. Manitowoc County claimed to and did cede control of the murder investigation to the neighboring Calumet County Sheriff's Department because of Avery's suit against Manitowoc County.

In March 2006, Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, was charged as an accessory after he confessed under interrogation to having helped Avery kill Halbach and dispose of the body
