History
History information is some background and history about the location. This is meant to be a basic summary. Below the history records you will find sources in which you can click on to find out more information. There may be multiple history records per location.
Established around 1817, East Gustavus Cemetery in Gustavus, Ohio, continued to serve as a burial site until 1892. The cemetery contains several headstones dating back to before the Civil War, offering a glimpse into the area's early history. One notable story from the cemetery involves Frances Maria Buel, who, in 1832, was tragically murdered by her stepfather, Ira West Gardner. Her headstone, situated under a maple tree in the cemetery's northwest corner, marks the spot where she is buried.

Stories
Stories are just that. Stories and personal accounts that have been reported about the location. This section could also contain research notes as well.
While visiting this location and paying our respect to Frances Maria Buel, we spent some time roaming the grounds looking at some of the other memorials. During this time we had our Ovilus with us, a device that converts electromagnetic fields into words that some believe are restless spirits trying to communicate. It was interesting that we were picking up EMF within the center of the cemetery, while both of us had very little to no cell phone service. Furthermore, right down the street from the cemetery is a power station. We left the device on as we drove past to test to see if we were receiving any false readings. Once we left the cemetery's boundaries, the device detected nothing. We have added this cemetery to the database as a possible haunting site, but there are no other online accounts. We may return again in the future with digital recorders to see if we can conduct some sort of EVP session. As we began to respond to the device's readings, we felt as if we were being watched or that someone (or something) was with us in the cemetery. We often get this feeling in cemeteries, but this time it was as if there was a very weak presence trying to reach out to us for some reason.
