The Terminal Tower Residences are located within one of the most iconic buildings in Cleveland, the Terminal Tower, which stands proudly on Public Square. The tower was part of the ambitious Cleveland Union Terminal project, developed in the early twentieth century by the Van Sweringen brothers. Originally envisioned as a transportation hub connecting rail lines into the city, the project quickly expanded into a massive complex that included offices, retail, a hotel, and a grand train station. Construction began in the 1920s and reflected the rapid growth and industrial strength of Cleveland during that era.
When the Terminal Tower officially opened in 1930, it immediately became a symbol of the city. Rising more than 700 feet into the skyline, it was the tallest building in the world outside of New York at the time. Its design followed the Beaux Arts architectural style, featuring grand arches, intricate stonework, and a commanding presence that defined Cleveland for generations. For decades, it served primarily as an office building and transportation hub, with thousands of commuters passing through its concourses daily.
The complex around the tower worked like a city within a city, with shops, restaurants, and services all connected under the tower. At its peak, the train station beneath the building handled multiple major rail lines and served as a central gateway into Cleveland.
