Libraries are typically old buildings with a rich history; they are filled with stories and knowledge contained within books, which could attract lingering spirits who may want to continue learning or experiencing the stories even after death. Additionally, the quiet and secluded nature of a library can contribute to a heightened sense of the paranormal. This characteristic is one of the reasons libraries are frequently considered potentially haunted locations. One also needs to consider the land that the library is built upon. Paranormal activity is often tied to the land and not the particular structure. If there has been paranormal activity within buildings that have been razed and a new building is built in that location, the activity may continue in the new structure.
Old factories or mills are often considered "haunted" because of their history of potentially tragic accidents, harsh working conditions, and the large number of people who may have died on site during their operation. These factors have led to stories of lingering spirits attached to the building due to the traumatic experiences associated with the location. The dilapidated state of many abandoned locations also contributes to a spooky atmosphere, further fueling the belief in hauntings. When a town was under siege, forts would often call in and protect the community. There are reports of non-military spirits roaming abandoned military forts, remaining there for protection.
