History

From the Perkins Estate, the City of Warren purchased Perkins Park in the year 1931. When it was first established, the park was referred to as the Perkins Flats. It also contained the Perkins House, which is currently the location of City Hall. The original estate included the Perkins House, 7.5 acres of lovely grounds, and 32 acres of the field that had been known as Perkins Flats in the past. The field was located between the homestead and the Mahoning River. The first baseball games took place on five newly constructed diamonds in May of 1932. The development of the park is ongoing up until the present day, with the addition of a volleyball court in the year 2013. The park has become a beloved recreational area for the community, offering not just sports facilities but also scenic walking trails and picnic spots. Families flock to the site, making memories amidst the natural beauty and vibrant atmosphere that the Perkins estate continues to foster.

Reports from other sites about the tragic events on this land are inaccurate. According to reports, Perkins' son hanged himself from one of the park's trees. When his father found out, he then hung himself. This assumption is historically incorrect. The truth is, there are two reported suicides on this property, but one of Henry Bishop Perkins ( called Bish by family and friends), who had shot himself along the banks of the river. The other is that of Martha Brown, who was the maid of the Perkinsneighbors. Martha was found in a storage shed on the property, and since they found a bottle of poison the next day, they ruled her death a suicide. The coroner's office took her body and buried it in an unmarked grave without conducting any investigation into her death. Bish's father committed suicide at his office behind the mansion two years after Bish's death.
There are reports from several people who have seen apparitions dressed in period clothing roaming the grounds as if they were searching for someone or something. Historically, there were two searches that took place on this propety. One for the missing girl Martha when she vanished one night, and the other when Bish didn't come home to the mansion when he was supposed to and left a note to come find him by the river. These events have left a lingering energy in the air, drawing curious visitors and paranormal enthusiasts alike. Many believe that the spirits of Martha and Bish continue their restless wanderings, forever tied to the land where their stories unfolded.
There have also been reports of purple orbs and mists in photographs throughout the area, as well as a woman dressed in white walking the grounds. It is believed that this may be the spirit of Martha still roaming the grounds. Some say she searches for something lost, while others believe she is simply drawn to the energy of those who wander too close to the water's edge. Witnesses have described feeling an inexplicable chill in the air when encountering her apparition, as if she carries the weight of her past with her. Many visitors, intrigued by the legends, have left offerings at the water's edge, hoping to appease her spirit and perhaps uncover the truth behind her haunting presence.
