Appomattox Court House National Historical Park

Appomattox Court House, located in Virginia, is widely recognized as the location where, on April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, therefore bringing an end to the American Civil War. The site is historically significant and has been the setting for many ghost stories and legends. Augustus Root, a lieutenant colonel in the 15th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Cavalry, is the subject of a story that is particularly noteworthy. During the conflict at Appomattox Court House, a bullet to the neck instantly claimed Root's life. The yard of Lewis Isbell's house, which is now the park headquarters for Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, was used to temporarily bury his remains so that they might be preserved for future generations. Locals have long called this house "The Haunted House of Appomattox," and they blame Root's presence for the unexplained events. Another testimony that is intriguing comes from a forum conversation in which a reenactor shared a personal experience that they had while they were at Appomattox. He was awakened in a makeshift barn shelter by the sound of heel plates clicking on concrete. After he spoke out loud and identified himself as a Confederate soldier, the phenomenon stopped occurring. Despite his efforts to find someone, he was unable to locate his intended target. Additionally, the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is home to a rag doll known as the "Silent Witness." During the surrender, the doll was present, and later on, Union soldiers were seen tossing it around. After being lost for a long time, it was returned to Virginia, where it is now on display in a museum in the park, which is visited by many.
