History

History information is some background and history about the location. This is meant to be a basic summary. Below the history records you will find sources in which you can click on to find out more information. There may be multiple history records per location.

The Adam Thoroughgood House stands as one of the oldest surviving colonial homes in Virginia Beach. For many years, local tradition claimed that Adam Thoroughgood himself built the house during the 1630s. Later architectural study and research suggested that his great-grandson Argall Thoroughgood likely completed the existing brick structure around 1719. Even with that correction, the home still deeply ties to one of the earliest English families that shaped the region.

Adam Thoroughgood arrived in the Virginia colony as a young indentured servant from England and rose to become a landowner, civic leader, and influential settler. He acquired large tracts of land in the area that would later become Princess Anne County and eventually Virginia Beach. His success story became part of local legend, helping preserve his name long after his death.

The house itself reflects the transition from rough frontier dwellings to more permanent homes of the colonial gentry. Built of brick with steep rooflines and heavy chimneys, it showed stability and wealth in an era when many structures were still wooden and temporary. Over generations, the home was altered, expanded, and adapted as tastes changed.

By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the old house had weathered centuries of use and neglect. Preservationists recognized its importance and worked to save it. Restoration campaigns in the twentieth century helped stabilize the structure and recover many of its historic features, allowing later generations to understand early Virginia life.

Today the Adam Thoroughgood House serves as a museum and educational landmark. Visitors walk through rooms furnished in colonial style and learn about the family, architecture, and changing history of the Chesapeake region. Its age, atmosphere, and long family story have also helped turn it into one of Virginia Beach's best-known historic legends.

Stories & Folklore

Stories & Folklore are just that. Stories and personal accounts that have been reported about the location and passed down from generation to generation. This section could also contain research notes as well.

With age comes mystery, and few places in Virginia Beach carry the same sense of old memory as the Adam Thoroughgood House. Visitors often describe the building as quiet in a way that feels unusual, as if sound settles into the brick walls. Guides and guests have long shared stories that the house feels occupied even when no one else is inside.

One of the most repeated legends involves a woman seen moving through the halls carrying what appears to be candlelight. Witnesses describe a soft glow crossing a room or staircase before fading into darkness. Some believe she is linked to one of the women of the Thoroughgood family, and she is still checking on the home she once managed centuries ago.

Another frequently mentioned figure is a man in old-fashioned clothing, sometimes described in brown or dark colonial-style attire. He is reportedly seen standing in doorways or near windows for only a moment before disappearing. Those who favor family legends claim he may be a former owner returning to inspect the estate.

Staff and visitors have also reported strange physical sensations. Cold spots appear in warm weather. Footsteps are said to cross upstairs rooms when no one is there. Doors have been heard moving or closing on their own, and some people say they felt watched while standing alone in the parlor.

Outside on the grounds, stories tell of a red-haired woman wandering near the property line at dusk. She is usually seen only briefly and then gone. Some connect her to colonial times, while others believe she represents an even older history tied to the land before the house was built. Whether fact, imagination, or folklore, the Adam Thoroughgood House has earned a lasting reputation as a place where the past does not fully rest.
