The Haunting of Everett Covered Bridge

Definition: A paranormal ghost story surrounding the Everett Covered Bridge

The original Everett Covered Bridge, which crosses Furnace Run, was built due to a tragedy that took place in the area some years before its construction.

On a blistering winter night in 1877, valley farmer John Gilson and his wife had to cross Furnace Run when returning home from visiting friends. A winter storm had caused the waters to rise and ice to obstruct the ford they would have used previously to cross the river.

In passing around the ford, trying to find another area to cross, Mrs. Gilson was thrown from the carriage into the water.

Trying to save his wife, Mr. Gilson lost his footing and was dragged by his horse into deeper water down the river.

Mrs. Gilson was able to make it to the shore, but Mr. Gilson's body was not recovered until four days later.

Local residents decided to construct the bridge in hopes that a tragedy such as this would not happen again to others who had to make this crossing in the future.

As time has moved on, there have been some unexplained occurrences that take place at Everett Covered Bridge.

People have reported feeling uneasy in the area surrounding the bridge as if something or someone was trying to warn them.

Ghostly vapors and partial apparitions have appeared in photos that were taken around the bridge as well.
