History

History information is some background and history about the location. This is meant to be a basic summary. Below the history records you will find sources in which you can click on to find out more information. There may be multiple history records per location.

The Terminal Tower Residences are located within one of the most iconic buildings in Cleveland, the Terminal Tower, which stands proudly on Public Square. The tower was part of the ambitious Cleveland Union Terminal project, developed in the early twentieth century by the Van Sweringen brothers. Originally envisioned as a transportation hub connecting rail lines into the city, the project quickly expanded into a massive complex that included offices, retail, a hotel, and a grand train station. Construction began in the 1920s and reflected the rapid growth and industrial strength of Cleveland during that era.

When the Terminal Tower officially opened in 1930, it immediately became a symbol of the city. Rising more than 700 feet into the skyline, it was the tallest building in the world outside of New York at the time. Its design followed the Beaux Arts architectural style, featuring grand arches, intricate stonework, and a commanding presence that defined Cleveland for generations. For decades, it served primarily as an office building and transportation hub, with thousands of commuters passing through its concourses daily.

The complex around the tower worked like a city within a city, with shops, restaurants, and services all connected under the tower. At its peak, the train station beneath the building handled multiple major rail lines and served as a central gateway into Cleveland. Over time, however, the rise of automobile travel caused a decline in rail use, and by the late 1970s, passenger train service through the terminal ended. ([Case Western Reserve University

In the late twentieth century, the Terminal Tower and its surrounding complex underwent major redevelopment. The area was transformed into what is now known as Tower City Center, blending retail, office space, and entertainment. The building itself remained a defining landmark, even as newer skyscrapers surpassed its height. Its historic significance and architectural beauty ensured its preservation as a centerpiece of downtown Cleveland.

A major shift came in the twenty-first century when developers began converting portions of the tower into residential living spaces. The transformation of several lower floors into modern apartments while preserving the historic character of the building created the Terminal Tower Residences. Today, the residences offer a rare opportunity to live inside a landmark that, for most of its history, was never intended for full-time residents; they blend nearly a century of history with modern urban living.

Stories & Folklore

Stories & Folklore are just that. Stories and personal accounts that have been reported about the location and passed down from generation to generation. This section could also contain research notes as well.

The Terminal Tower has long been associated with quiet whispers of paranormal activity, likely fueled by its age, scale, and constant transformation over nearly a century. While it is not as widely known for hauntings as some older Cleveland locations, stories from workers, security staff, and visitors have circulated for years. Many describe the building as having a strange presence, especially in the quieter overnight hours when the bustling energy of the day disappears.

One of the most common experiences involves unexplained footsteps echoing through empty hallways. Employees working late shifts have reported hearing movement on floors that were completely vacant, only to find no one there when they investigated. Elevators have also been known to stop on floors where no calls were made, opening to empty corridors before continuing on their own.

Some stories suggest that the spirits of former workers or travelers from the building’s early days may still linger. Given that thousands of people once passed through the train station below, it is easy to imagine that emotional moments, departures, and tragedies may have left an imprint. There are occasional reports of shadowy figures seen near service corridors or reflected in glass surfaces, disappearing when approached.

Security personnel have shared accounts of lights flickering in isolated areas of the building, particularly in sections undergoing renovation. In some cases, these flickers appear to respond to movement or presence, adding to the feeling that something unseen is interacting with the environment. These reports are often dismissed as electrical issues, yet they continue to be repeated over time.

With the addition of residential units, some residents have claimed unusual experiences inside their apartments. Strange noises, objects being slightly moved, and the feeling of being watched have all been mentioned in quiet conversations. Whether these are simply the sounds of an old building settling or something more, the Terminal Tower Residences carry a subtle but persistent reputation as a place where the past may still linger just beneath the surface.
