A full narrative history section
In 1806 the first person was buried at what is now the West State Street Cemetery, a beautiful graveyard settled easily on the roling hills of Athens. Over the years following, veterans from the Revolutionary War and Civil War would be buried here along with congressmen, a baseball player, and even a notorious murderer. Some early headstones have long perished to the harsh Ohio elements over the last two hundred years. Many of these fallen gravestones belonged to soldiers who fought for independence not only from outsiders, but also in the ware between north and south.
West State Street Cemetery is one of Athen's most historic cemeteries, and is often associated with the legend of the Pentagram Cemeteries. West State Street Cemetery is also home to the legendary "Weeping Angel" statue, who eye-witnesses claim cries tears, moves, and even whispers to passing visitors.
In July of 2019, we visited this cemetery and conducted an investigation. The following are some photos from that visit. Please click on the "Photo Page" above for more photos.
